How to deal with drywall dust and other post-reno cleaning

Are you planning an office renovation this year? Post-renovation cleaning, especially dealing with drywall dust, requires a strategic approach. Follow our step-by-step guide for efficiently cleaning an office during and after renovations.

Step 1: Contain the dust

Make sure your contractors seal off vents before any reno to prevent dust from circulating into and through the HVAC system. If possible, open windows during construction to improve ventilation. Cover the floors and hang plastic sheeting over doorways.

Step 2: Remove bulk dust first

As often as possible during your renovation, vacuum drywall dust off walls, ceilings, and baseboards before wiping any surfaces. Use a shop vac (HEPA filter recommended) instead of a regular vacuum, as fine drywall dust can clog standard filters.

Step 3: Wipe down surfaces, but in the right order

On a regular basis, and starting from top to bottom, wipe down all surfaces to prevent dust from settling throughout your office space. A slightly damp microfiber mop works wonders on walls to capture fine dust, and electrostatic dusters can trap dust without spreading it around any further.

Step 4: Clean the floors

After your renovation is finished, sweep or vacuum any hard floors, then wash with clean water and a small amount of vinegar, changing the water out frequently. For carpets, vacuum several times with a HEPA-filter vacuum and consider steam cleaning as a final touch.

Step 5: Change air filters and clean ducts

To ensure drywall and construction dust isn’t spread through vents and ducts, replace or clean HVAC filters immediately after renovations. If dust has circulated through the ductwork, schedule professional cleaning before turning the heat or A/C back on.
