Cleaning Safety During Cold, Flu and COVID Season

As we move through the cold, flu, and COVID season, cleaning becomes even more important, but cleaning safely matters just as much as cleaning thoroughly.

When sanitizing your home or workspace, always use products designed to kill germs and bacteria, and carefully follow label instructions. Many disinfectants require a specific dwell time on surfaces to reach full effectiveness.

Proper PPE (personal protective equipment) should always be used when cleaning, whether at home or professionally. This includes gloves, clothing that covers exposed skin, and masks when working with stronger chemical cleaners.

Never mix cleaning products or use them back-to-back without proper ventilation or time in between use. Certain combinations can be extremely dangerous. Always read and follow product directions.

Cleaning products that should never be mixed include:

  • Bleach and ammonia

  • Bleach and acids

  • Bleach and alcohol

  • Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar

Always clean in a well-ventilated area, and if incompatible products were used, allow the space to fully air out before re-entering.

When storing cleaning products, ensure all chemicals are tightly sealed and kept separate from incompatible substances. Store them safely away from children and pets using locked cabinets or safety latches when possible. Always label products clearly if transferring from the original container or if labels have become unreadable.

Finally, remember that cleaning can be physically demanding. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and step outside for fresh air if fumes, smells, or fatigue become overwhelming.

Safe cleaning practices protect not only your space, but your health too.
