What is Post Construction Cleaning?
Post construction cleaning is the detailed cleaning of a newly built or renovated space after construction work is complete. For contractors and project managers, it takes a site from “construction complete” to ready for the final walkthrough or handover.
What Does Post Construction Cleaning Include?
Post construction cleaning takes care of the dust, debris and residue left behind after construction work is finished. This can include:
Fine drywall and construction dust on virtually every surface
Dried caulk or silicone
Paint splatter and overspray
Drywall compound, plaster and mud
Glue and adhesive residue
Tape and stickers
Protective films and coverings
Grout haze or excess grout
Concrete/mortar residue or splatter
Sawdust and small construction debris
Scuff marks and footprints
Dust and debris inside cabinets, window tracks, along trim and in corners
When Should Post Construction Cleaning Happen?
Post construction cleaning should happen after the major construction work is finished, but before the space is handed over or occupied.
You generally want to wait until the trades have finished the work that creates the most dust and debris. Otherwise, your cleaners may finish the job only for another crew to come through and create a new mess.
On larger projects, cleaning may happen in stages. A rough clean can remove construction debris while work is still underway, followed by a detailed final clean once the trades are finished. A final touch-up may also happen just before the walkthrough or move-in.
For a property manager, you want to schedule your final clean close enough to handover that the space stays clean, while also leaving enough time to deal with anything the cleaners uncover or that still needs attention.
